Afraid of the Dentist? We have an interesting remedy for dental anxiety

Jul 15, 2015

We added an awesome addition to our practice yesterday to help patients deal with any stress they are experiencing -- or to just give them an outlet for biding the time.

Adult coloring books.

Before you click away, hear us out. Adult coloring books have been around for decades, but interest in their therapeutic benefits has spiked since the publication or “Art-thérapie: 100 coloriages anti-stress” (2012), a French coloring book that has sold more than 3.5 million copies worldwide.

What accounts for the success of these coloring books and the trend?
Here are some great articles on the trend:

How they work

Researchers posit that by sitting down with pencil (or marker) and an intricately designed pattern, people are harnessing their fine motor skills while accessing a "flow" zone that leads to relaxation. Thus, coloring books provide a kind of meditative experience where all else falls away, including stress and anxiety.

How we are using them

We are always looking for new ways to create a wonderful experience at the dentist for his patients. As of yesterday, we have five new coloring books for adults at the practice, as well as colored pencils and markers in a range of colors. The books are available both for patients waiting in the waiting room and for anyone who is in the chair.

The titles we have acquired are:

Adult Coloring Book: Stress Relieving Patterns

Really RELAXING Colouring Book 2: Color Me Calm

The Calm Coloring Book

Balance (Angie's Extreme Stress Menders Volume 1)

Meditation Coloring Book: Wonderful Images to Melt Your Worries Away

If you have done any coloring at our practice, we'd love to see it! Just take a picture and post on Instagram and tag us #artistdentist or #coloringatdrdiesburgs!
