Change can be very hard, especially when it comes to daily habits. But it is possible to change. Here are some helpful tips for including brushing and flossing in your daily routine.

1. Start by brushing and flossing twice every day for 21 days. You have to do the new activity for at least a month for it to become a habit. Performing the habit at the same time every day will help the process.

2. Stay accountable to yourself Only you can be responsible for your teeth. If you have trouble remembering, keep a record.

3. Do not give up if you forget. There is no use in berating yourself or throwing in the towel if you notice you've skipped a day. Simply get back on the horse and get brushing and flossing again.

4. Make it work for you. You might prefer brushing, or even flossing, in the shower as part of your cleansing routine. Shake things up and see what works for you.

Steps to a healthy mouth If you have resolved to make your teeth a priority in 2014, pledge to include the following in your daily routine:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day, preferably in the morning after breakfast and at night before you go to bed
  • Floss daily
  • Eat a healthy diet and limit snacking
  • Replace your toothbrush when bristles are frayed
  • Schedule and attend regular dental checkups
